New online service request form

Web forms are pretty boring and not sexy at all. We are using Wufoo.com for our form management. If there are such things as sexy web forms, they did it. They make it fun to build and have nice spam control. We created a new Service Request and spiced it up with color. I’ll play with a color scheme until I find a good one. Plain white is soooo boring. You can check it out here. The fields will highlight as well when you click inside them. You can pick your date and time of your appointment. We'll do our best to schedule you.

Check it out.

C O R O N A here we come….

We are trying out our hand in marketing to South Corona since we do lots of service in Triliogy at glen ivy. The response has been great.  Actually, we are in North, South, East and West Corona.  The ad we are in is the Corona Magazine of Values.

For the last 5 years, we have primarily marketed heavy in the Eastvale area and it is still where about 90% of our business is. Just thought we'd test the marketing waters in Corona.

Introducing PC Parties

I would like to introduce PC Parties. It's an off-shoot of what I am already doing now, which is training but with a twist, it's own website and it's own business model. Check out www.pcparties.net for more info.

My Laptop's Dirty Little Secret
Saturday, 08 November 2008 16:20

I bought a new laptop this week. Brand new, never been used. I decided to see if my skeptisism was warranted with new laptops. I always advocate buying a new laptop and immediately changing the hard drive drive for a retail one. Laptops are cheap now for a reason. The reason is,  they are skimping on something. Usually the screen or the drive. For as many bad hard drives I see on relatively new laptops, I knew something was fishy.

My test is random, but it's my experience and I thought I'd share. One of the first things I did when I got my new laptop was to run Drive Inspector Pro on the new laptop drive to see how things are. Sure enough, my findings were as expected.. At boot, my drive had a 47% reliability and had issues reported with the S.M.A.R.T system. See this link  for the screenshot. I cloned the drive onto a brand new-in-box Western Digital Scorpio laptop drive and ran the test upon first boot. You can see those photos here . Quite a difference. 100%'s all the way around as it should be. In addition, the drive temp is much cooler than the previous one.

So, my question to Lenovo is...just when were you going to fail? When I needed you the most? When I was in the middle of an important presentation or when I was giving a PC Party to a group of 10 people?

I bought a Lenovo (IBM) T60, reportedly one of the most reliable laptops and a staple in the business market. My laptop had a dirty little secret. My drive was half way in the grave when I got it. I suspect it is happening all over and with most manufacturers but since I do not get fresh laptop computers every day I thought I'd test this one out.

As a laptop goes, after a week with the new drive, I like it. I am feeling much better with the data being on a new drive too!

My point, download Hard Drive Inspector Pro and run it on your system. NOW.

Oh, and never trust new laptops.

Your Hard Drive Is Trying To Tell You Something
Saturday, 08 November 2008 16:16

Anyone that knows me knows my opinion of hard drives, and they are not very high, with maybe the exception of the velociraptor by Western Digital, one of the fastest on the planet and which happens to be powering my main PC. However, despite my love affair with my C drive, most computers that come my way have a problem.

That problem is failing drives. Heat is most likely the culprit, but not the only problem. I use a pretty cool tool called Hard Drive Inspector. You can download the 14 day trial at their website found here. Hard drive inspector reads the S.M.A.R.T system on your drive. Look here for a full explanation, but basically it is the built in analysis tool in each drive. It alerts the system of failures, and health of the drive. Hard Drive Inspector tells you the reliability of the drive, the Power-on time and the temperature of the drive. It's a neat thing to check on as most drives that fail "without warning" actually do give of warnings if you know how to read them. Download this tool and you can read your drives warning signs. You can see a readout of my system's drives here.
