Biases
Wednesday, 08 October 2008 00:21

OK, I am biased. I admit it. I am biased. There, I said it. But, you want your computer guy/gal to have biases. Isn’t that why you ask us for advice all the time?

Here are a few quick biases. Take into consideration they do change from time to time. Every computer guy has their own biases and opinions about tech. Here are mine (at the moment).

New PC’s
Love – Dell. Good cases. Good hardware. Can’t speak for support since I never use them, but I am sure it’s in India somewhere like everyone else.

Hates – HP. Too many issues to list. They own Compaq too, so I’ll lump them in too.

Laptops
Same as above.

Anti-Virus
Love – Avast Home. Free and good.
Hates – Mcafee and Norton. Panda is a Hog too.

Printers
Loves – Epson. Easy to configure. Great Color
Hates – HP. Software Stinks. Hardware is pretty good.

Photo Editing
Loves – Acdsee (acdsee.com). 6 years with this product
Flirting with – Picassa (http://picasa.google.com/)

Routers
Loves – Netgear. Solid, easy to configure. Good product line
Hates – Buffalo. Possibly Linksys, but willing to give Linksys a shot since they are owned by Cisco now.

I was saving that for my next round. But, since you asked.

Internal Drives
Loves. Western Digital.
Hates: (with extreme bias) Seagate.

I have a Velociraptor from Western Digital, very cool and fast. http://www.maximumpc.com/artic...drive_ever

External Drives.
Loves: Western Digital (MyBook). Maxtor
Hates: Anything with the word Seagate in it.

Staples has pretty good selection at good prices.

This is a touchy one for me. I dop nit like Macs. There. There is my bias. HOwever, I want people to use the computer that fits them best. MAcs are much different from PC's, many people do not know the digfference. I hear, "I am thinking of a new computer. Do youy suggest Dell, HP or Mac.". Like it is a brand of computer. It's not. The Operating system is different. Software is much more limited and the costs are much more than a PC. I would have him take these under concideration, visit a Mac store so he can see for himself. But, I am sure they'll convince him otherwise. Besides Bose, they have the best marketing on Earth.
