Anyone that knows me knows my opinion of hard drives, and they are not very high, with maybe the exception of the velociraptor by Western Digital, one of the fastest on the planet and which happens to be powering my main PC. However, despite my love affair with my C drive, most computers that come my way have a problem.
That problem is failing drives. Heat is most likely the culprit, but not the only problem. I use a pretty cool tool called Hard Drive Inspector. You can download the 14 day trial at their website found here. Hard drive inspector reads the S.M.A.R.T system on your drive. Look here for a full explanation, but basically it is the built in analysis tool in each drive. It alerts the system of failures, and health of the drive. Hard Drive Inspector tells you the reliability of the drive, the Power-on time and the temperature of the drive. It's a neat thing to check on as most drives that fail "without warning" actually do give of warnings if you know how to read them. Download this tool and you can read your drives warning signs. You can see a readout of my system's drives here.
